I Wanna Ask
This section provides frequently asked questions and answers about host and session selection. Review carefully and consult your parents prior to enrollment.
Q&A: Academic relevance
Do I need a J-1 internship in a field relevant to my academic studies?
Yes, the J-1 Intern visa is tailored for foreign students and recent graduates to participate in a structured internship program closely aligned with their academic field in the US. This ensures that the experience contributes to their academic and career objectives by providing practical, field-specific experience. For students in interdisciplinary programs or those with undeclared majors or minors, it's essential to clarify the internship's relevance to their studies. If no specific alignment is evident, applicants should enter their most likely intended discipline in good faith, with supporting proof available upon request.
Q&A: Ideal Candidates
How would you describe an ideal candidate from the prgoram and host's perspectives?
Program Perspective:Ideal candidates for CCIP NYC are those who meet program criteria, including financial readiness and English proficiency, and exhibit a growth mindset aligned with the program's goals. Given the program operates on a communal basis, applicants demonstrating collaborative skills and a friendly demeanor, fostering a harmonious team environment, are crucial.

Q&A: Hosts Selection
How does the host section process work?
Upon joining, you indicate your host and session preferences by opting out of unwanted hosts and sessions. Upon program acceptance, although the final host and session remain unknown, you are guaranteed an internship with one of your opted-in hosts and sessions. To confirm your acceptance, submit the first installment within 72 hours of program acceptance. Afterward, you will be invited to complete Panel 01, followed by finalizing your host and session preferences. Once this is done, you will submit the second installment before proceeding to the issuance of Form DS-2019 and the visa interview.
NOTE: If you cannot find a session you can attend, you may consult us and propose one, and we will add it to the roster. Program sessions and housing arrangements are aligned. Students attending odd sessions may have a hard time finding a roommate to share a double room.
Q&A: Host Selection
How many hosts can I opt out of? Can I change my mind after acceptance?
As a general practice, we advise applicants to submit their initial application with multiple host and session choices to maintain flexibility. If choices are limited, there's likely a lower chance of acceptance.Once program acceptance is issued, you cannot alter your host and session choices. Acceptance will be based on one of your options. However, if a new host joins and your host isn't finalized, you can add them to your preference list.
Q&A: Interviews
Do hosts conduct separate interviews?
Yes, after preliminary acceptance, you will arrange interviews with one or more of the hosts you have opted in for. This allows you to learn more about the host and what is expected, and for both parties to ask questions and determine a good fit.Q&A: Compensation
Are stipends provided?
CCIP NYC internships operate primarily on a voluntary basis and are unpaid, adhering to both federal seven-point unpaid requirements and New York State regulations. Some hosts offer a stipend to cover transportation costs.Q&A: Commute
Is commuting difficult in NYC? How do students normally get to work?
NYC is one of the most accessible cities in the US. The majority of residents commute to work by public transportation, such as the subway and/or bus. From the designated hotel to internship sites in Manhattan, it takes about 45 minutes on average (depending on peak train times). Some hosts in Jamaica are about 45 minutes away by bus. Some hosts located nearby the hotel can be reached by walking within 5-25 minutes.Q&A: New Hosts
I cannot find my ideal host in the roster. What can I do?
If you cannot find your desired hosts or internships in the roster, you may consult us. If the hosts meet the requirements and align with the program's goals, we may consider adding them to the roster. Alternatively you may find your US host on your own and apply as a "self placed " intern.Note that securing summer internships in NYC for foreign nationals can be particularly challenging due to competition with individual local interns and city-funded SYEP programs for locals. Most internships offered by CCIP emphasize community engagement value. To accommodate participants' special interests, we will arrange activities, such as three-day bank visits, during the program for them to participate.
