J-2 dependents
Some exchange visitors come to the US with dependents (i.e., spouse and/or unmarried children under the age of 21). The J-2 visa is issued to qualifying dependent(s) who are allowed to stay in the US in J-2 status for the duration of the J-1 exchange visitor’s program.
• Each pays a separate nonimmigrant visa MRV fee
• Exempt from the SEVIS fee
• Each has their own Forms DS-2019 and DS-160
• Can work with Employment Authorization Card (EAC)
• May study part-time/full-time during the specified program period
NOTE: To qualify, a child must be unmarried and under the age of 21. Other family members, including partners not legally married to the J-1 and domestic workers, are not eligible for J-2 status.
